Porzio Volunteers with Morris Habitat for Humanity
July 12, 2010
Porzio, Bromberg & Newman’s 2010 summer associates, along with other Porzio employees successfully completed Porzio’s first workday for Morris Habitat for Humanity on July 7. Summer associates Allison Antwi, Sandra Gonzàlez, Jenna Kessler, Matt Mills and Rachel Segall joined Renée Davis, Raquel Lord, Carole Mecca, Marissa Mecca, Brett Moore, Karen Moore-Negast, Kathy Petrozzo, Spring Potoczak, Jodi Safarik, Heather Siegelheim and Kerri Wright to assist with the construction of a duplex in Morristown. When completed, the home will be owned and occupied by the Rodriguez family, a single mother with two children. Following a tutorial by a volunteer supervisor, Porzio volunteers went to work measuring, cutting and installing drywall. Some volunteers also ran electrical wire. Although tired, hot and dusty at the end of the day, the volunteers found the experience fun and rewarding.
Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat for Humanity builds and rehabilitates simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with families in need. The Habitat houses are affordable because there is no profit included in the sale price and no interest is charged on the mortgage. The family’s monthly mortgage payments go into a revolving fund, which is used to build more houses. Habitat conducts an extensive screening process and selects homeowners based on need for affordable housing, ability to repay a Habitat mortgage and willingness to partner with Habitat. In addition to making monthly mortgage payments, each homeowner family must invest hundreds of hours of labor into the building of their house and the houses of others.
